Shopping for new clothing can be quite expensive in Australia. Recent studies have reported that on average, yearly expenditure on apparel per person in Australia is around $1,430. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics that amount is almost the same, as the average everyday Aussie spends on filling up at the petrol station each year.
Now while this number might seem high, the data shows us that this is the average amount spent. For people which have expensive tastes in fashion, that number can go even much higher.
For those who don’t want to cut back on spending on clothing, there are ways in which you can better control your expenses and your budget will thank you for it.
1. Buy clothing which fits you now
One habit which most people find hard to break is buying clothing which you will fit into at a later date, most often after a few months of hitting the gym.
Now while this might seem like a great idea as it often does for children, it’s not an ideal way for adults to build their clothing collections. Kids can often “grow into” their clothing where as for the rest of us, clothes which don’t fit correctly end up stuffed into the back of the wardrobe.
Simply put, it’s a waste of money shopping for the future. You’ll feel and look much better when correctly shopping for your size and you will cut back on your annual clothes shopping bill as well.
2. Try to choose quality
Spend a little time doing your homework before next hitting the shops and your wallet will thank you for it. By getting a good deal at quality clothing retailers, you will have money left over which you can either save, or use to spend on additional fashion accessories.
By taking your time and not rushing into an impulse buy, you can select quality fabrics which will last more than just a handful of washes. Quality clothing lasts much longer than cheaper and inferior products which in turn will help you to save money.
Don’t be too worried that you are missing out on the latest trends in fashion. Shopping for high quality clothing that might not be in fashion this week, is a smart way to save money in the long run.
3. Buy clothing on sale
Waiting for annual clearance sales or discounted sales days, are a fantastic way of getting great deals when it comes to clothing shopping.
Studying the sales cycles which the big department stores follow is a good method of knowing when discounts will be available. An example of this is the Boxing Day sales, as well as end of season run out sales.
Shopping for clothing doesn’t have to blow your budget if you take a little time to research your purchases and that you remember to avoid any impulse buys. If you love a clothing item enough to make the cost per wear worth it, that’s a great sign of a quality purchase.
